During Brest Peace Treaty controversy sided with Leftist Communists. From 1918 assistant commander, Moscow Military district. Fought on Western and Eastern Fronts.
Member, Military Revol Council, 5th Army. 1919, as chairman, Ufa Revol Committee, conducted negotiations with members of Samara Constituent Assembly on behalf of Party Central Committee. 1920 worked for Siberian Burea, Party Central Committee.
Editor, periodical “Sovetskaya Sibir’”. 1920-1921 sided with “Democratic Centralists”. 1921-1924 Bureau member, Moscow Party Committee and head of its Agitation and Propaganda Department.
