nokuma Gen-ichiro studied under Takeji Fujishima while in school. He left Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts without graduating (1928).
Since 1926 has exhibited works at Imperial Academy’s art exhibition, being specially selected twice (1929 and 1933). Thereafter established the Shinsei Sakuka Kyokai (New-system Art School Association), with friends dissatisfied with reorganization of Imperial Academy's Art Exhibition by Education Minister Matsuda. Despite series of changes it has undergone, his painting style reflects the new sense of the age and he is known as one of the representative artists of modernism. Active in wide range of works including painting, industrial art and commercial art.
