Joined theCommunist Party, 1919. Lecturer in economics in Kharkov and Kiev in the 1920s and 1930s. Arrested as a Trotskyist, 1936.
Spent the next 20 years in Gulag camps. Rehabilitated and re-instated in the party, 1956. Became involved in the human rights movement.
His works circulated in samizdat. Resigned from the Communist Party, 1974.
