Graduated from the Moscow Institute of Economics and from Moscow University in law.
Through his ex-wife (who was involved with high Kremlin society in the 1930s), gained knowledge of secret intrigues during the years of the Stalin purges. Maintains that Ordzhonikidze did not die of heart failure (official version) nor committed suicide (usual unofficial version), but was shot on Stalin’s orders on the eve of a planned antiStalin speech. Arrested for a short time, 1938, released 1939.
Re-arrested during Stalin’s anti-Semitic campaign, 1949. Released. 1955. Under Khrushchev, worked as a lawyer. Became active in the human rights movement.
Emigrated, 1979. Settled in the USA.
