Ippei Tanaka was born in 1882 in Tokyo, Japan.
He graduated from a school managed by the Formosan Association (1902).
He served during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) as an interpreter. Upon his return in 1925 he was appointed a professor at the Daito Cultural School.
He embraced Islam (1923) went on a pilgrimage to Mecca with other Chinese Moslems. He was the second Japanese to embrace Islam, the first being Kotaro Yamaoka.
