Ippo Okamoto

Background

Ippo Okamoto was born in 1700. Original name was Tametake Sugimori. He was a younger brother of Monzaemon Chikamatsu, the great playwright.

Education

Ippo Okamoto was a disciple of Sampaku Ajioka, a physician.

Career

After he was excommunicated by his master, Ippo Okamoto endeavored to popularize medic knowledge among the masses. He was widely read medical literature and wrote books on medicine in easy terms for the public. His books were well read in the Edo Period.
