Career
He was New York State Comptroller from 1882 to 1883, elected at the New York state election, 1881, but defeated for re-election at the New York state election, 1883, by Democrat Alfred C. Chapin. At the New York state election, 1885, he was the Republican candidate for Governor of New York, but was defeated by Democrat David B. Hill. He was buried at the Davenport Family Cemetery in Bath, New York
The Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital in Bath, New York, was named after him.
