Ira Eisenstein was born on November 26, 1906 in New York City, New York, United States.
Eisenstein graduated from Columbia University, first with a bachelor’s degree in 1927 and then with a doctorate in 1941.
Eisenstein founded the Jewish Reconstructionist movement after studying with Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan, who originated the movement’s ideology. He studied and worked under Kaplan at the Society for the Advancement of Judaism. Eisenstein was rabbi for the Society for thirty-two years and later helped found the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, where he was president for thirteen years. From 1959 to 1970 Eisenstein was president of the Jewish Reconstructionist Foundation. He edited the journal The Reconstructionist for forty-six years and wrote several books, including Creative Judaism, The Ethics of Tolerance, Judaism under Freedom, and Reconstructing Judaism: An Autobiography.
