Ira Garari began his career as a teacher in county schools in Pennsylvania, later working as a high school teacher of science and mathematics. He joined the faculty of Rutgers University in 1919, eventually attaining the rank of full professor in 1922.
Garari retired in 1955 to write full time. He also served as a consulting chemist during this same period. His first book was Applied Chemistry (1924); his final work, out of five, was Introductory Food Chemistry (1976).
