He was born on August 28, 1840 in Edinburg, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, United States, son of David and Mary Sankey. In a family the members of which were musically inclined he early acquired ability to read music and familiarity with sacred songs and tunes. In 1857 his father was made president of a bank in Newcastle, Pa.
He attended the high school.
After school he became a clerk. Joining the local Methodist church, he was soon chosen choir leader and superintendent of the Sunday School.
Upon the outbreak of the Civil War he served a term of enlistment in the Union army and then returned to Newcastle to be assistant to his father, who had been appointed collector of internal revenue. Singing had now become one of his chief interests, and his services were frequently utilized at Sunday School conventions and political gatherings in his section of the country.
In 1870 he was a delegate to the international convention of the Young Men's Christian Association at Indianapolis. Here his singing attracted the attention of Dwight L. Moody, who persuaded him to join him in the religious work he was then carrying on in Chicago. He assisted Moody in the remarkable series of meetings held in England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1873 to 1875, and in the years that followed he contributed in no small degree to the success of Moody's evangelistic campaigns in the United States and abroad, the names of the two becoming inseparably associated.
Published collections of the songs used in the Moody and Sankey meetings gained almost world-wide popularity. The first of these, Sacred Songs and Solos, was published in England in 1873. This was followed by Gospel Hymns (nos. 1-6, 1875 - 91) and other collections. They were compilations from various sources; Sankey wrote comparatively few, though he supplied the music for more; and in the editing he was assisted by others. In 1906 Sankey published My Life and the Story of the Gospel Hymns.
His last years were spent in blindness at his home in Brooklyn, N. Y.
His first and most famous composition was "The Ninety and Nine". His most popular collections of the songs (in cillaboration with Dwight L. Moody) - Sacred Songs and Solos (widely known as "Sankey & Moody") which eventually ran to over 1200 units and is still in use today, Gospel Hymns. Neither Moody nor Sankey profited from the immense sale of the hymn books. The royalties, turned over to a board of trustees, went chiefly to the support of the Northfield School which Moody established. In 1979–80, the Gospel Music Association recognized Sankey's prodigious contributions to gospel music by listing him in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

His voice - a strong baritone of moderate compass - at all exceptional. He could move vast audiences profoundly. Although his chief work was to sing the Gospel, he could also make moving verbal appeals and was successful in dealing with individuals in inquiry meetings. Nothing in his personal appearance was of assistance to him. He was bulky in figure, weighing over 220 pounds, his face was adorned with long side-whiskers, and he was somewhat unctuous in manner; yet his audiences, forgetting all this, were captivated by the sweetness and compelling emotion of his singing.
On Sept. 9, 1863, he married a member of his choir, Fanny V. Edwards, daughter of Hon. John Edwards. His wife died in 1910 and their son John in 1912. He was survived by his wife and two sons.
