Career
He left the active service voluntarily August 7, 1861. He re-engaged, always as captain of the 1st Michigan Infantry September 12, 1861. He was promoted to Commander April 28, 1862 and Lieutenant Colonel August 30, 1862.
He commanded the 1st Regiment Michigan Volunteer Infantry.
He was wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862. He was promoted to colonel on March 18, 1863.
At the Battle of Gettysburg, the regiment was attached to the brigade of Colonel William South. Tilton, who faced the Confederate attack in the area of stony hill on July 2, 1863. He received his patent Brigadier General March 13, 1865 for "bravery and meritorious service during the war.".
