Born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1923, Barber graduated from University of British Columbia in 1950 with a degree in forestry.
In 1978, aged 55, Barber founded Slocan Forest Products, a lumber producing company. Barber served as Slocan"s chairman until his retirement in 2002. Barber died at his home in Tsawwassen, British Columbia in 2012 at the age of 89.
Barber used his resource-based fortune to become one of British Columbia"s most prominent education philanthropists.
Barber"s $20 million donation to University of British Columbia would result in the construction of the Barber Learning Centre. Barber also donated money to many other schools across British Columbia.
Barber helped to establish the Barber Scholarship Society and UNBC"s I.K. Barber Enhanced Forestry Laboratory.
