This book on African politics presents a simple unifying approach to the complexities and difficulties of African states. Power and Class in Africa argues that the basic problem of African states is neither instability nor creating political order; the basic problem is stability in those interest and for what purposes. Based on this theme, this book offers a comprehensive overview of continuities and conflicts between Africa's past and present. Who gets what and who gets left out -- when, where, and how -- are the basic questions that are covered within the contents of the text. With the examination of these questions, the student comes to a better understanding of Africa's dual heritage -- imperialism and pre-colonial greatness. The text also discusses the continent's evolution from its struggle for independence through the phase of consolidation of power to the process of bureaucratic development and economic growth.
