Formerly in 89th, 35th, and 23rd Regts. Retired 1879; served during Indian Mutiny, 185S-59 (medal). Was private secretary and Aide-de-camp to Sir A. East. Kennedy, Companion of the Bath, Governor-in-Chief of West. African Settlements (successfully carried out several special missions to native chiefs), 1868-1870.
Private secretary to Marquess of Normanby, Knight Grand Cross of Saint Michael and Saint George (successively Governor of Queensland and New Zealand), 1871-1879.
Colonial Secretary and Registrar-General Grenada, 1879-S9, and Administrator of Saint Vincent, 18S9-93. Administered Government, of Grenada, 1880, 1882, 1884, 1885, and 1886-1887.
Acted as Colonial Secretary of Leeward Islands and President of Antigua, 188S, and as Administrator of Leeward Islands, 1889. Retired from official life, 1893.
