Isaac Ashmead was an American printer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Background
Isaac Ashmead was born on December 22, 1790 in Germantown, Pennsylvania, United States to Jacob and Mary (Naglee) Ashmead.
He was well connected, and belonged to a family which had come to Philadelphia in the opening year of the colony. Ashmead's father served in the Revolution and he himself served in the War of 1812.
Education
Ashmead learned the art of printing with the help of William Bradford, a Philadelphia printer.
Career
He was active in church affairs and in establishing evening schools, and was manager of the Philadelphia Institute for apprentices. In 1819 he founded the Sunday and Adult School Union, a body which developed into the widely known American Sunday School Union.
This organization, with nation-wide activities, distributed a variety of publications, and Ashmead was its printer.

Ashmead was a man of wide reading, of scrupulous integrity, and was held in general esteem.

In 1828 he married Belina Farren, daughter of Jacob Farren of East Haven, Connecticut; they had six children.
