(Excerpt from White Diamonds Better Than "Black Diamonds":...)
Excerpt from White Diamonds Better Than "Black Diamonds": Slave States Impoverished by Slave Labor; Read the Appendix, and Decide From Fact The first View we take of the human organization leads us to the conclusion of the poet, that mind makes the man. The essentials of his existence, of his character and life, of his end and destiny, are found in his breast, mysteri ously clustered and associated, blended and yet distinct. A few elementary faculties, or organs, constitute the whole of this delicate, symmetrical, wonderful fabric. This endow ment is sacred, temporarily lent to earth, to be improved and employed for lofty purposes and winged for immor tality; in the meanwhile, it is held in sure custody and familiar supervision by its creator, to disenthral it from every disability, and to secure its everlasting escape from the bondage of corruption and mortality. Man is such a creature, that without these features of mind or spirit, or with them paralyzed and debased by neglect, vitiated by abuse or perverted by false lights, he sinks to a level with the brutes; but with appropriate and efficient culture and refinement, he mounts upward as on eagles' wings, and vies with angels. There can be no doubt that the Creator designed and ex pected to receive richer tributes of praise and glory from the world of mind, intermingling unseen with the material creation, than from all the other stupendous productions of his six days' work. Hence, by endowing mind with fea tures compounded of rationality and moral sensibility, God has linked it to the supreme intelligence of heaven, and entwined its spiritual tendrils around his eternal throne and nothing but the benumbing and deranging power of depravity, aggravated by unpropitious outward circum stances and relentless arbitrary violence, can frustrate this ennobling system. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Isaac Van Arsdale Brown was born on November 4, 1784 at Pluckemin, Somerset County, New Jersey. The son of Abraham R. and Margaret Brown, he was of Huguenot descent.
Isaac Brown took his degree at Princeton in 1802, and was tutor there during the year 1805-06. Later he received an hononary degree of D. D. from Lafayette College conferred to him in 1858.
After taking a degree from Princeton, in the meantime, Isaac Brown had studied theology under Dr. John Woodhull of Freehold, New Jersey, and was licensed and ordained by the New Brunswick Presbytery in 1807. He was given the pastorate of the church at Lawrenceville, known until 1816 as Maidenhead. Three years later he established Lawrenceville Classical and Commercial School, first called the Maidenhead Academy. He was its principal until 1833.
In 1842 he moved to Mount Holly, New Jersey, where he was instrumental in organizing a Presbyterian church. He also preached occasionally at Plattsburg, New Jersey, and organized a church there. Various records report him as living at Trenton, Somerville, Bordentown and New Brunswick, New Jersey, for the remaining years of his life, in all of which places he preached at various times.
He was a trustee of Princeton College from 1816 and of Princeton Seminary from 1822 until his death.
After he left Lawrenceville he devoted some time to literary work, and published a Historical Vindication of the Abrogation of the Plan of Union by the Presbyterian Church (1855); and Slavery Irreconcilable with Christianity and Sound Reason; or, An Anti-Slavery Agreement (1858; republished in 1860 under the name of White Diamonds Better Than "Black Diamonds"; Slave States Impoverished by Slave Labor). A Sermon on the Work of the Holy Spirit Delivered before the Synod of New Jersey had been published in 1837. The Memories of Robert Finley (1819) were written during the period of his pastorate and the early years of the School in Lawrenceville.
On April 19, 1861, Isaac Brown died at his Trenton home and is buried in Mercer Cemetery.
One of the Isaac Brown's achievements, after he obtained the pastorate of the church at Lawrenceville, was the establishment of Lawrenceville Classical and Commercial School, first called the Maidenhead Academy. After he moved to Mount Holly, New Jersey in 1842, he was instrumental in organizing a Presbyterian church, and also organized a church in Plattsburg, New Jersey. Dr. Brown was also one of the founders of the American Colonization Society, and worked for its advancement, and was one of the original members of the American Bible Society.

(Excerpt from Biography of Rev. Robert Finley, D. D. Of Ba...)
For eleven years Isaac Brown continued as pastor of the church in Lawrenceville and during the remainder of the period of his residence here was carried on the minutes of the Presbyterian Church as minister of that denomination.
Finley, who seems to have been much the same type of man, interested in the same movements, made a great appeal to Brown, who says of the book in the preface that "the memorial is an act not less of justice than of kindness to ourselves. "
He was a member of the American Colonization Society and one of the original members of the American Bible Society.
Quotes from others about the person
It was said of him that he was a man of "rare talents and learning, enterprising and public spirited, a warm friend, a liberal and zealous supporter and defender of what he felt was the right. "
Isaac Brown married in 1807 Mary Wright Houston of Philadelphia.
