Isaac received much of his education in Leiden.
Among the best known of his collections of historical and literary anecdotes are his Curiosities of Literature (1791 - 1834) in several volumes, Calamities of Authors (1812 - 1813), Quarrels of Authors (1814), and Amenities of Literature (1841), which won him a reputation as a great raconteur.
