He commanded United States Ship Warrington (Doctor of Divinity-30) in 1915, and during World War I, commanded United States Ship Wadsworth (Doctor of Divinity-60) and fitted out and commissioned United States Ship Talbot (Doctor of Divinity-114). Captain Dortch served as naval attaché in Argentina and Chile during 1922-1925 and died while on active duty 4 June 1932 at San Francisco, California. The destroyer United States Ship Dortch (Doctor of Divinity-670) was named in his honor.
