Promoted commander, 1804. Assisted General William Eaton in attacking and seizing Derna in Libya, 1805. Commissioned captain, 1806.
In command of Constitution, 1810, noted for defeating and compelling surrender of British frigate Guerrier during War of 1812 (1st important naval action of war). Commanded Boston Navy Yard, Portsmouth Navy Yard, 1812-1815. Appointed naval commissioner, resigned to return to Boston Navy Yard.
Commanded Pacific Station. Commissioned commodore. Commandant.
