(An exquisite memoir celebrates the undying bond of twin s...)
An exquisite memoir celebrates the undying bond of twin sisters more than half a century after one of their deaths. Long before the loss of her twin sister Grace, Isabel Bolton's parents both died of cholera and their five children were raised by relatives. Bolton's prose captures the chaotic and unstructured life she and her siblings led, finding comfort in each other among the violet-scented meadows of their uncle's estate in New London - until Grace's untimely death. First published in 1966, this extraordinary memoir is a classic evocation of childhood at the turn of the century.

(The twins had been taken by their nurse Matilda to see th...)
The twins had been taken by their nurse Matilda to see the hummingbirds which at this hour and season came in a swarm ot the red horse-chestnut tree on the front lawn of their grandmother's house in Springfield. They were pale chidren with large dark eyes and they looked exactly alike. Each twin was always accompanied by another four-year-old child who resembled her so exaclty that it is hardly an exaggeration to say that the expressions in their faces and the motions of their bodies occurred simultaneously, as though they were set in action by the selfsame springs. With Matilda they always spoke in German but for themsleves they had a strange, almost incomprehensible language-partly German, partly English.
