(Excerpt from The Elstones: A Novel The autumn night was ...)
Excerpt from The Elstones: A Novel The autumn night was very still, following upon a week of wild and unchained equinox. Southwesterly gales of incredible fury had whipped the sea to a foaming, yeasty froth, of which discolored and almost solid fragments had rioted through the streets of the tormented coast towns. Many seasoned veterans of the Sussex woodlands that fringed the summits of the Downs had been uprooted by the gale. By contrast the night had acquired a stillness that was uncanny, almost tangible. It was, as it were, a hushing, a cessation almost, of Nature's very breathing, akin to, though far more deeply suggestive than, the exhausted stillness that so often presages the birth of dawn. The quiet, hushed world might have been pausing breathlessly in anticipation of some great and momentous event. In the creases and hollows of the great grey Downs thin wisps of mist drifted like fairy raiment, luminous, insubstantial. But the sky was perfectly clear and starlit, and the blunt shapes of the Downs were outlined in grey, shadowy silhouette, acquiring here and there a fantastic, remote resemblance to enormous profiles, drawn with bold decision and giant pencil; human faces in preposterous foreshortening; crouching animal forms menacing and alert. And beyond them, invisible except from the heights, it was possible to picture the sea, lying glass-like after its recent wild commotion, as still in its passionless calm as a frozen lake. Lady Elstone had lived all her married life of twenty-eight years in sight of the Downs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Rest House It was snowing hard, and the wind blew against their faces, stinging them as if it were hurling little sharp arrow-heads of ice against them - diminutive weapons that yet managed to add considerably to the unpleasantness of their present lot, in the opinion of these two people arrested in their journey by the sudden plunge of the car into a deep snowdrift. Peggy Metcalfe stood shivering in the road; her teeth were chattering, and her hands and feet were becoming every moment more and more numb. She watched with mechanical attention the prostrate form of her brother Peter, who was "doing things" to the car, here in this lonely and rather wild part of North Somersetshire. All around them the field spread white, frozen, and cheerless. Beyond the fields the hills stood up snow-covered against a leaden gray sky. Here and there deep blots of brown stained the white - disclosing woods that were as yet unburied beneath the snowy pall. (James Bett was sitting alone on aN ovember morning in the...)
James Bett was sitting alone on aN ovember morning in the big library atE ast Feddon Hall. He was smoking a cigar and reading the Times, which an attentive footman had brought to him half an hour earlier, but it was easy to see that his thoughts were not wholly concentrated on the foreign telegrams upon which his eyes rested. He sat near the window, as the day was gloomy and the light bad, and occasionally he glanced at the typically East Anglian landscape which lay outstretched beyond, under a low gray sky. Sir James would have preferred to sit nearer to the generous fire which burned and leaped with such ruddy, enticing flames under the black carved mantelpiece; but he had abandoned that position on the arrival of the Times because he could not see to read there. When he raised his eyes and looked out of the window he shivered involuntarily. The cold gloom of the scenery did not appeal to him. At East Feddon the river widened out into a small broad, across which a great wherry, with its huge brown sail unfurled, was slowly making its way.
