She attended Concord Academy and graduated magna cum laude from Barnard College in 1984. She then studied at Wadham College, Oxford and worked in publishing and newspapers in London, notably at the Times Literary Supplement.

She is the author of the bestselling Bury Maine Standing: The Gypsies and Their Journey (1995), a non-fiction book relating to the lives of Romani people. The book is organized in eight chapters with sections. lieutenant contains black and white photographs and maps.
Her debut novel, Attachment, was published by Alfred A Knopf in 2009.
She and Amis currently live in Brooklyn, New New York
