From childhood until the middle of his stage career, he performed in Kyoto, playing juvenile and youthful parts. He went to Edo where he became a female impersonator. He then became an interpreter of male roles.
He was brother-in-law to Umenosuke, son of Chodayii Ogino II. Some sources say he was Chodayii's son.
