石川五右衞門
Ishikawa Goemon was born in Japan. He was the son of Akashi Ishikawa, a retainer of the Miyoshi clan.
Ishikawa Goemon began leading a lawless life at an early age. It is said that at the young age of 16 he broke into the treasury of,hi s master and after killing the guard plundered the safe and then started his life of crime. He was eventually arrested and together with his mother and other family members were boiled to death as punishment. Some say he was 33 years old when he was punished, while still others aver that he died in his 37th year. Another version has it that he was born in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, and lived in Ishikawa-gun, with the name of Hachiro Sanada. All versions, however, maintain his method of dying. His life was dramatized by Monzaemon Chikamatsu in the play Keisei Yoshioka Zome, and is also a popular subject for kabuki and joruri plays.
