Itcho Hanabusa was born in Osaka. He was the son of a physician, Hakuan Taga.
He went to Edo with his father when ho was 14 years old. Studied painting under Yasunobu Kano, who initiated him into the secret of the Kano School. Itcho also studied haiku poetrjr under Basho Matsuo. He originally trained in the Kanō style, under Kanō Yasunobu, but ultimately rejected that style and became a literati (bunjin).
Exiled the Miyalcejima Island, accused of satirizing the dissipated life of Shogun Tsunayoshi Tokugawa in his picture, Azuma-bune, and thereby tempting lords to dissipation. Pardoned and came back to Edo in 1709. He probably made almost all pictures for Somin Yokoya's woodblock prints. Though his painting was under the influence of the Kan5 School, the themes of his pictures, like ukiyoe, were taken from the plebeian life of his period. They, therefore, were well received by the masses. Also a witty writer, he wrote many popular songs.
