In the diplomatic service from the mid-1960s. Served in both East and West Germany. Headed the Soviet delegation at the Intermediate-range Nuclear Force talks (INF) in Geneva in 1981-1983, and discussed the informal compromise known as the ‘walk in the woods’ formula.
Dealt with space matters at the 1987 Geneva talks. Married with two children. Appointed Soviet Ambassador to West Germany, 1987.
