Graduated from the Tallinn Theatre Institute, 1949.
Leading Estonian film actor. Became internationally known for two parts-King Lear in Grigorii Kozintsev’s film of the same title, and the part of Snaut in A. Tarkovskii’s Solaris. Works mainly at Tallinn Film Studio.
First film role, 1961. Continued acting and made dozen of films but remained unknown until King Lear. Speaks Russian with a strong Baltic accent, and his choice for the part was the subject of some controversy.
Apparently Kozintsev deliberately chose him for his accent and nonSlav looks since the film was for the international market.
