Worked in fahter’s tailoring shop. 1882 first verse published. Wrote verse and stories for children.
Translated Robert Burns, Ada Negri, Maria Konopicka, Yanka Kupala, Avetik Isaakyan, et cetera After death of l.Z. Surikov helped run his lit and music circle for self-taught writers. His verse eulogized nature and the work of the peasant and crafstman.
Some of his poems were set to music by Kyui and Rebikov.
