1869-1880 lecturer, from 1880 professor, from 1894 Honorary pof, Saint St. Petersburg Agrie (then Forestry) Institute. Also professor, Military Medical Academy. Associate professor, then professor extraordinary, Saint St. Petersburg University.
From 1900 chief botanist, Saint St. Petersburg Botanical Garden and director, Botanical Museum, Russian Academy of Sciences. 1917-1919 vicepres, Academy of Sciences. Studied plant respiration and chlorophyll.
Did research on crystalline deposits in cells, distribution of hesperidinc, dolcite and other substances in plants. Wrote studies of fertilization in plants. 1897 sponsored establishment of freshwater biological station at Lake Bologoy.
From 1916 founder and life president, Russian Botanical Social. Supported some vitalist theories, which drew heavy criticism from A.K. Timiryazev. Several species and genera have been named after him.
