Foreign 63 years custodian. Manuscript Department, Public Library - a post formerly held by his father Armed Forces Bychkov. Continuing a tradition established by his father, he published annual "Reports" on the library’s manuscript collections and accessions.
From 1887 member, Archives Commission. After father’s death published Volume(s) 5-7 of Pis’ma i bumagi Petra Velikogo (Letters and Documents of Peter the Great). Published material on 19th-century Russian writers and personalities, including Victoria and Albert Zhukovskiy, Master of Arts Korf, Pushkin, Gogol, et cetera
Apart from being an expert on manuscripts, he was also a specialist in related historical disciplines. During World War 2 stayed in Leningrad during siege to help collect the manuscripts of dead or evacuated scholars and writers.
