Graduated from the Petersburg Theatre School, 1897. Graduated from the Petersburg Conservatory, 1911. Pupil of A. Liadov.
Until 1917, dancer with the Mariinskii Theatre. Wrote music for piano and violin. Conductor and concert pianist.
Wrote the music for several new ballets such as Kukly Gospodina Mareshalia, 1900. Also ballet critic. In 1914, opened a ballet school with his brother. Director of the school until 1925.
From 1939, taught at the Leningrad Conservatory (plasticity and dance).
