Career
After graduate assistant dissector. Chair of Normal and Pathological Anatomy, Kazan’ University. Also extern. Chair of General Surgery, Kazan’ University.
1914 drafted into Russian Army and served as a regt physician. From 1915 head Surgical Department, Kazan’ district Military Hospital and intern, Hospital Surgery Clinic, Kazan’ University, where he continued surgical studies under Professor A. V. Vishnevskiy. From 1917 chief physician and surgeon of a mobile field hospital with a Red Army division
1921 returned to Kazan’ after demobilization and completed his internship at Hospital Surgery Clinic to become an assistant professor 1926 defended doctor’s thesis on secretory innervation of the prostata. From 1933 associate professor
1933-1960 head, Surgical Department, 3rd Kazan’ Municipal Hospital. 1936-1960 also professor and head, Chair of General Surgery, and head, Chairs of Faculty and Hospital Surgery, Pediatric Faculty, Kazan’ Medical Institute. During World War 2 surgical consultant, various evacuation hospitals, Kazan’.
As a pupil and associate of Professor A. V. Vishnevskiy, was one of first Russian surgeons to work on the development of local infiltration anaesthesia. Did research on the healing properties of novocain, which he used to block the splanchnic nerves and neighboring sympathetic trunks in inflammatory processes of the abdomen and viscera. Developed new technique of preparing catgut which was introduced at the Kazan’ Catgut Works.
Devised several methods of operating for gastric and duodenal ulcers. Also devised an intestinal suture for the treatment of anastomosis. In the course of his career performed some 30,000 complex operations and trained many outstanding surgeons.
Attended numerous surgical congresses and was deputy chairman, Tatar Surgical Social and bd member, All-Russian Surgeons’ Social. Wrote over 50 works.
