As a pupil and associate of Professor A. V. Vishnevskiy, was one of first Russian surgeons to work on the development of local infiltration anaesthesia. Did research on the healing properties of novocain, which he used to block the splanchnic nerves and neighboring sympathetic trunks in inflammatory processes of the abdomen and viscera. Developed new technique of preparing catgut which was introduced at the Kazan’ Catgut Works.
Devised several methods of operating for gastric and duodenal ulcers. Also devised an intestinal suture for the treatment of anastomosis. In the course of his career performed some 30,000 complex operations and trained many outstanding surgeons.
Attended numerous surgical congresses and was deputy chairman, Tatar Surgical Social and bd member, All-Russian Surgeons’ Social. Wrote over 50 works.
