From graduate until death worked at Obukhov Hospital, Saint St. Petersburg (Leningrad), where he was one of A. A. Troyanov’s most brilliant pupils and became chief physician. 1901 defended doctor’s thesis on the surgical treatment of cranial defects, for which he recommended the use of calcined bone. 1913 performed almost total resection of pancreas for cancer.
From 1915 until death also professor, Faculty Surgery Clinic, then Hospital Surgery Clinic, State Institute of Medical Knowledge. Did important research on penetrating wounds of the thorax, for which he advocated predominantly conservative treatment. 1922 was first Russian surgeon to succeed in forming an artificial oesophagus by the Roux-Herzen method.
1928 performed open heart surgery (ventriculotomia cordis explorativa) for the removal of a bullet and predicted the possibility of open surgery for heart diseases. Made major contribution to abdominal surgery. Devised two operations on the sigmoid colon ( Grekov 1 and Grekov II) which won universal recognition.
Detected the functional relationship between Bauhin’s valve and the pylorus. Used Pavlov’s theory to explain the pathogenesis of certain diseases (stomach ulcers, appendicitis, etc). Maintained close contacts with Pavlov.
1928 established special laboratory and clinic at Obukhov Hospital to study digestive disorders. From 1932 founder-director, Medical Institute, Obukhov Hospital. Wrote still-valid papers on intestinal blockage, peritonitis and ulcers of the stomach and duodenum.
From 191 1 deputy chairman, after World War 2 chairman, Pirogov Surgical Social. From 1922 ed, journal Vestnik khirurgii ipogranichnykh oblastey (formerly Khirurgicheskiy arkhiv Vel’yaminova and now Vestnik khirurgii imeui 1. 1. Grekova); 1924 chairman, 16th All-Union Congress of Surgeons.
