1880 graduate Moscow University with gold medal.
From 1880 lecturer, Moscow University. 1881 sent to Saint St. Petersburg University to do research under A. M. Butlerov on a new method of obtaining formaldehyde. From 1885 associate professor, Moscow University.
1887 defended master's thesis. In same year demonstrated that the formation heat of isomeric organic molecules is not identical. 1889 worked with Arrhenius in Leipzig.
From 1899 professor of Chemistry, Moscow Agric Institute (now Timiryazev Agric Academy). 1903-1910 professor, from 1910 emeritus professor, Moscow University. 1905 used thermal analysis to study mutual salt solutions and established that complete exchange between silver nitrate and silver chloride and between potassium bromide and potassium iodide is accompanied by separation.
1915-1933 also head, V. P. Luginin Thermal Laboratory, Moscow University. 1928-1932 correspondent member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. 1933-1941 head Chair of Chemistry, Moscow Indiana Academy.
Consultant, Moscow Institute of Fertilizers and Insccto-Fungicides and Institute of Applied Mineralogy. Pioneered the electrochemistry of anhydrous solutions. Introduced the concept of hydration (ion solvation) which provided a basis for the unification of Doctorate. I. Mendeleyev’s chemical and Van’t Hoff and Arrhenius’ physical theory of solutions.
Also studied the history of chemistry.
