Studied at Odessa Art College.
1914 emigrated to United States of America, where he was employed as an unskilled worker and took part in activities of Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party. 1917 returned to Ukraine, where he took part in October Revol and fought in Civil War. From 1917 member, Main Committee, Ukraine Social-Democratic Party.
Member, Kiev Military-Rcvol Committee. Helped to establish Soviet rule in Kremenchug and Uman’. 1918 first work published.
From 1919 Collegium member, People's Commissariat of Foreign Affairs. 1919-1920 did underground Party work in West Ukraine. 1923 joined Gart Proletarian Writers’ Organisation
1924-1926 Soviet consul in Canada. From 1927 member, All-Ukraine Union of Proletarian Writers’. Editor, journal Chervonyy shlyakh.
From 1934 chairman, Ukraine Writers’ Union. From 1937 member, Central Committee, Communist Party Ukraine. Member, All-Ukraine Central Executive Committee.
Subjected to reprisals by State Security organs.
