Ivan Langer enjoys sports, theatre, fine art, and music In 1992 he acted in a music video "Myslel jsem si, že je to láska" (I Thought lieutenant Was Love) of the Czechoslovakian popular-rock band Mňága a Žďorp.
He was a vice-chairman of the Obcanská demokratická strana (Civic Democratic Party) which he joined in 1991.
In 2006 – 2007 he was the Minister of Informatics. In 2006 – 2009 he was the Minister of the Interior.
As a politician Ivan Langer focused at public administration, and drug policy (co-author of the book Rational Drug Policy). As a Member of Parliament or a minister he participated in many administration projects e.g. development of eGovernment (Information Technology based public administration) in the Czechoslovakian Republic, The Czechoslovakian Police reform (the campaign “Help and Protect”), Otevřená minulost (Open History – opening the archives of the communist secret police), limitation of the phone tap abuse, corruption fighting, fight against extremism, foreigners’ willing return, hooligan violence, the National Coordination Mechanism in search for missing children, upgrade of the equipment of professional and voluntary fire-fighters, et cetera
During his term as the Minister of the Interior the Czechoslovakian Republic entered “Schengen Space” (Border-free Europe), and the United States of America Visa Waiver Program.
Ivan Langer is active in education and safety & prevention fields. His term ended in 2013.
In 1996-2010 he was a member of the Chamber of Deputies (in 1996-2006 a vice-chairman), the Minister of Informatics and the Minister of the Interior. In 1989 he was a member of the Palacky University, and State Student Strike Committee. In 1996 – 2010 he was a member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czechoslovakian Parliament, between 1998 – 2006 he was a vice-chairman of the Chamber.
He serves as the chairman of the board of several institutions: CEVRO Liberal-Conservative Academy, a private college CEVRO Institute, Nadace Bezpečná Olomouc (Safe Olomouc Foundation), the Olomouc Fortress Museum, he is a member of boards of Nadace policistů a hasičů (Policemen and Firemen Foundation), Dětské dopravní nadace (Children Road Safety Foundation).
Since 1999 he was a founding member of the Palacky University board.
