His world championship record makes him Great Britain"s best ever athlete in the sport, and many consider him to be the world"s best, especially since he spanned both disciplines of canoe sprint and marathon. At club level, he has always competed for Elmbridge canoe club Lawler also competed in three Summer Olympics, but did not advance to the final in any of the Games he competed in.
His most notable was sixth in the semifinal round of the K-2 500 m event at Seoul in 1988.
However, they were unsuccessful and retired from the race due to injury and poor flow on the Thames. He now owns and operates "Ultimate Kayaks", selling new and used Nelo and Epic kayaks including those of Olympic athletes who chose not to take their kayaks home.
