From 1933 correspondent member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. 1935-1940 director, Gorky Institute of World Literature. Wrote about enlightenment in France and Russia, history of Russian and for lit and historical and methodological questions.
Edited works of Diderot and Béranger (1934-1935), Radishchcv and Heine (1938-1939) and Gor'kovskiye chtemya (Readings from Gorky) (1940). 1935 attended 1st International Writers’ Congress in Defense of Culture, Paris. Arrested by State Security organs.
