After graduate stayed on at Kazan’ University to study for professorship. 1915-1918 military surgeon. 1918-1922 assistant professor, Chair of Physiology, Tomsk University and head, Chair of Physiology, Institute of Physical Culture.
From 1922 worked at Leningrad Institute of Experimental Medical under I.P. Pavlov, conducting important research on higher nervous activity and the physiology of digestion. From 1924 head, Department of Physiology, Obukh Institute of Labor Hygiene and Occupational Diseases, Moscow. At the same time directed laboratories at the Timiryazev Institute and the Institute of Nutrition.
From 1934 head, Department of Human Physiology and director, Moscow Branch, All-Union Institute of Experimental Medical From 1944 head, Department of Vegetative Physiology, 1944-1949 director, Institute of Physiology, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Medical Sciences. 1948-1950 vice-president, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Medical Sciences.
Of particular importance was his work at Pavlov’s laboratory on stimulation of the cortex of the cerebral hemispheres in dogs. This led to the discovery of phase conditions in the cerebral cortex. And in turn led to an understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms of neurotic states.
From 1924 specialized in the physiology of digestion. In his latter years hypothesized the circulation of certain substances through the gastro-intestinal tract in the process of intermediate metabolism, with repeated utilization of these substances by the body. Made a great contribution to dietology and to the pathogenesis and treatment of gastro-intestinal ailments.
Headed Chair of Physiology, Liebknecht Indiana Pedagogical Institute. Also head, Chairs of Physiology, Lenin Teachers’ Training Institute, Centr Institute of Postgraduate Medical Training and Sechenov 1st Moscow Medical Institute. Deputy chairman, then chairman, Learned Medical Council, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics People's Commissariat of Health.
Editor and member, ed bds, “Arkhiv biologicheskikh nauk”, “Zhurnal eksperimental’noy meditsiny”, “Byulleten’ eksperimental’noy biologii i meditsiny” and “Fiziologicheskiy zhurnal USSR”. Foreign 25 years chairman, Moscow Social of Physiologists. Wrote over 100 research works.
