1911 graduated Medical Faculty, Moscow University.
After graduate worked at A. V. Martynov’s Surgical Clinic, where he eventually received a professorship. 1924 defended doctor’s thesis on pancreatitis stemming from disease of the biliary tract. From 1930 head. Chair of General Surgery, dean and deputy director, 2nd Moscow Med Institute.
1938 read paper on theory and treatment of wounds at 24th Congress of Surgeons. From 1939 head, Surgical Department, All-Union Institute of Work Capacity Expertise, Moscow. From 1942 head, Chair of General Surgery, 1st Moscow Med Institute.
During World War 2 chief surgeon, various evacuation hospitals. 1943 made study of pathogenesis and treatment of wound sepsis. 1944 co-founded USSR Academy of Med Sciences.
After World War 2 also head, Laboratory for the Clinical Study of New Antibiotics, USSR Academy of Med Sciences. Did research on diseases of liver, biliary tract and intestines. Proposed an original theory of wound periodization based on changes in the state of tissue colloids.
Honorary member, All-Union Social of Surgeons. Member, ed collegia, journals “Klinicheskaya meditsina”, “Meditsinski referativnyy zhumal”, etc. Co-ed, surgery section, “Bol’shaya meditsinskaya entsiklope- diya” (Large Medical Encyclopedia) (2nd ed).
Wrote about 100 works. Public!: Pankreatity v svyazi s vospalitel’nymi protsessami zhyolchnykh putey ipuzyrya (Pancreatitis Related to Inflammatory Processes in the Biliary Tract and Gall Bladder) (1933). Vrachebnaya ekspertiza trudosposobnosti (Medical Expertise on Fitness for Work) (1935).
