Ivan Tovar was born in San Francisco de Macoris, Dominican Republic in 1942.
Tovar studied fine arts at the National School of Santo Domingo, and during this time, he would meet with many European artists, that had emigrated because of the catastrophic times.
In 1963, Ivan traveled to Paris where he resided for 20 years. He has had expositions all over the world in Luxembourg, Stockholm, Lisboa, New York, and many other important art meccas. In 1968, Tovar won the 2nd prize in the Eduardo Leon Jimenes contest for a drawing. Critics have described his paintings as neosurrealism, but his compositions display a highly personal symbolic world.
As part of a treatment sober, rigorous, clinical, and cold under a surgical light, his paintings are open to the flesh, that is life and torture, pain and breathing rose and moved with toothed jaws, steel, metal. What he proposes is a detailed exploration of desire, as if this were some kind of monstrous prehistoric bird.
Appearing his name among outstanding personalities of the worldwide plastic arts, such as Picasso, Dalí, Miró, Magritte, Paúl Klee, Ives Tanguey, among other geniuses, Iván Tovar continues, among pine groves, reinventing each day, between music and the sound of silence, between his dreams and his successes as a creator, that although prominent, he communicates them with simplicity, as is normal, among the true stereos of the world, who let their works speak as a standard of their achievements.
Ivan Tovar is highly famous for his paintings "Autorretrato", "La plume aveugle", "Le serpent enrageur", and "Painted Window." Undoubtedly, this great Dominican painter is the most internationally renowned, not only for his long stay in Paris but also for his daring surrealist theme, which makes him the possessor of one of the most refined techniques.
Ivan Tovar adheres to the artistic traditions of Surrealism.
Ivan has a wife and a daughter, Daniela.
