1888 entered Saint St. Petersburg Conservatory, graduating in 1893.
1893 stage debut at Mariinskiy Theater. Fall 1893 went to Milan. 1894 performed at Reggio nell' Emilia Municipal Theater and at Alfieri Theater, Turin.
1894-1895 worked at Khar’kov Opera Theater. 1895 — 1929 at Mariinskiy Theater. From 1916 taught singing.
Professor, Leningrad Conservatory. Famous for his exposition of VVagnerian roles, including Tannhäuser, Lohengrin and Tristan. Roles: Sobinin and Finn in “Ivan Susanin” and “Ruslan and Ludmilla".
