Ivan Georgievich Steblin-Kamensky was a Fleet Lieutenant, company commander on various ships of the Baltic Fleet (1908-1917). He participated in the scientific expedition, he worked as an assistant of the director of the lighthouses of the Baltic Fleet in Petrograd (1919-1921).
Since 1919, psalm-reader of the Holy Trinity Church in Petrograd. John was a deacon (1920), archpriest and rector (1923) of the same temple.
He was subject to unreasonable arrests (1921, 1924). In 1924 he was sentenced to 3 years of Solovetsky prison camp, after which he was exiled to Voronezh. He organized a collection of donations for the imprisoned priests, including Archbishop Peter (Zverev). Unreasonably repressed (1929), imprisoned in Solovki prison camp. Later arrested in the so-called "Buyevtsy" case (1930), shot.
John was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church (2000) as a martyr.
