Ivan Ivanovich Afanasyev joined the army in 1745. He built 80-gun ships at the shipyard in Saint Petersburg in 1758-1762. He worked at the Saint Petersburg and Olonets shipyards in 1763-1766. Ivan Ivanovich was sent to Tavrov to construct ships for the Don fleet. In 1769-1770, Afanasyev built 5 prams and 12 water craft of a "newly invented kind" at Ikorets and Pavlov shipyards and received 1 260 rubles for that. Worked for the Olonets shipyard in 1772-1776. Built 13 ships in Kherson in 1779-1788, 1789-1791. Ivan Ivanovich built the bombardier ship named Novopavlovsk in 1788-1789 in Pavlovsk. He built a ship in Nikolaev in 1791-1793.
