Ivan Vasilyevich Petrov was born on June 13, 1906 in Abramovka, Novokhopersk Parish (now Voronezh region, Russian Federation), Russian Federation.
Ivan Vasilyevich Petrov graduated from the Voronezh Musical Technical School (1934). He finished the Military Conducting School of the Moscow Music Conservatory (1936).
In 1936-1944 he was a Military orchestras’ conductor; in 1944-1950 - Head of the Higher School of Bandmasters; in 1950-1954 - Inspector of orchestras of the Soviet Army; in 1954-1958 - Head of the military orchestral service of the Ministry of Defense of the USSR, principal conductor of the Soviet Army and artistic director of the Special Honor Band of the USSR Ministry of Defense; in 1958-1963 - Head of the Military Band Service of Odessa Military District.
Since 1948 he was the leader of the combined orchestra comprising parts of the Moscow Garrison at parades on Red Square (Moscow). In 1957-1958, 1964-1968 was a lecturer at the Military Conducting School of the Moscow Music Conservatory.
