Clay became a columnist for Arkansas Democratic-Gazette in 1979. A year later she took a position of a manuscript editor of C. V. Mosby Company. Then in 1981, Ivie became a reporter and editor of St. Louis Globe-Democrat. Also she served as an assistant director of publication "Sporting News" from 1987 to 1990.
In 1991, Clay was appointed a senior information specialist at the University of Missouri. Since 1995 she has been a manager of committee at St. Louis Development Corporation.
Clay is a member of National Association of Black Journalists and Alpha Kappa Alpha.
On January 24, 1992 Ivie Clay married William Lacy Clay Jr. They have a child.
