Served in the Egyptian Campaign, 1882, as Brigade-Major of the Brigade of Guards (mentioned in despatches, medal and clasp, Khedival Star, and 4th Class of the Order of Medjidie). With the Guards Camel Regiment in the Nile Expedition, 1884-1885, including the desert march to Metemmeh and the actions at Abu Klea, Gubat, and Metemineh.
Military Attach^ at St. Petersburg, 1886-1890. Commanding Canadian local forces, with local rank of Major-General, 1890-1895. Commanded all Colonial Troops in England for H. M.’s Jubilee Commemoration, 1897.
Commanded 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards, 1897-1898. Assistant Adjt.-General Home District, 189S-99. A. Attorney - General South African Field Force, and in charge of Foreign representatives at Headquarters of the Army, 1899-1900 (medal and four clasps).
Received 2nd class of the Order of the Red Eagle from His (or Her) Imperial Majesty the German Emperor, and Commander of the Order of the Crown of Italy from His (or Her) Majesty the King of Italy. Officer of the Legion of Honour (France), 1901. 1st Baronet, cartulary-register 1907; Justice of the Peace, Deputy-Lieutenant; Member of Parliament (Liberal) Monmouthshire since 1906; rotired; Colonel (retired list) and Honourable Major- General of the Canadian Militia.
