A Chinese by birth he came to Japan during the Azuchi Momoyama Period and resided at Hirado in Hizen Province (Nagasaki Prefecture). It is said he was contracted by Nobunaga Oda to supply the tiles for his Azuchi Castle in Omi Province (Shiga Prefecture). Though the shape of tiles have changed since then, some of the tiles made by Ikkan can still be seen on the roofs of temples built during his days.
