Mythological character. According to popular mythology is the last of seven deities who came to earth. Is said to be father of Amaterasu-〇mikami and Susano- o-no Mikoto. The legend says that he married Izanami-no-Mikoto, who gave birth to pyashima (eight large islands) thus founding Japan. They are then said to have retired to a palace in Awaji (an island off Kobe). This legend is supposed to tell of the origin of Japan.
