STEEL, J. E.f Companion of the Distinguished Service Order was born on October 6, 1832. 2nd son of late John Steel, merchant, of Glasgow, and Grace, daughter of James Strang of Westhouse, East Kilbride, Company Lanark.

Was founder of business of West. Strang, Steel, and Company, merchants in Burmah, which, in 1890, was converted into a Joint Stock Company—Steel Brothers and Company, Limited. Owns 2000 acres in Selkirkshire, and 3500 in Roxburghshire. 1902; served with South African Light Horse in Boer War, 1902 (despatches, Queen's medal, 6 clasps, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order).
